Spotlight on Society Staff

Jane Tsilova joined the National Office team in August 2015 as a Chapter Support Manager. We are proud to introduce you to a new Society staffer!

Jane, tell us a little about yourself.
I’m just another Russian spy for the National Office, building leaders who make a better world! But really, I moved to America as a 7 year old, energized, vivacious and excited about all things related to pizza, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Nintendo and Ninja Turtles! My English as a second language teacher was Spanish, so until the second grade I spoke English with a Spanish accent. I may be from Russia, but I have a fear of the cold. I have tried Octopus in eight different countries, but River Edge, New Jersey still has the most delightful of Octopi. I played on an all-boys soccer and roller hockey team and broke more hockey sticks than the team combined. I LOVE PEOPLE, I love helping people, studying human behavior and observing interactions between others. Loving to help people led me to become a Therapist. I have worked with criminals on their path to gaining solace and freedom, addicts on their journey to sobriety, high school students on their way to graduation and supported children and families in recovering and accepting mental health ailments to live more functional lives. Currently, I’m training for a fitness competition, studying for my National Licensing exam and taking Latin dance classes. Staying busy is certainly one of my other hobbies.
How would you describe your experience at the National Office, and what is your favorite part of working here so far?
I am so happy! I can honestly say that I have never experienced such a welcoming team of people who support one another in a genuinely helpful way. Not only is everyone super positive and funny, but they work hard to develop and development which is entirely unconditional. The NSLS team is in no way replicable to other places of employment. Employees here are more than co-workers; they work hard while having fun, trying to inspire students to achieve their goals and establish skills that are long lasting. Additionally, I love that my calendar always has the potential to be filled, that the produce in the kitchen always looks polished and water is FREE!

What is your greatest accomplishment?
After years of self-discovery in pursuit of a satisfying career, I came to an eye- opening realization. It is not what you do; it is how you feel about what you are doing that truly matters! For me, it is to inspire people, motivate them, have them cry, see them laugh, and lead them to a place that they themselves couldn’t have envisioned without you; that’s my purpose.
What are you like outside of work?
I am a health and fitness enthusiast. I love music! I am a member of the Philharmonic, the soft side of me. Therefore, I am usually viewing a ballet, an opera or an orchestra, but most definitely listening to deep house music and electronic house music when my headphones are on. I love to eat ethnic food and travel outside of the United States. I secretly love watching the news and will watch every news channel to compare data and facts. If I could eat pizza and chocolate brownies for every meal without going into lactic or diabetic shock, I would! This easily transitions me into my most recent endeavor of committing to training for my first fitness competition in 2016. I love a challenge, especially one that challenges my discipline and self-will. I am slightly addicted to a good show, for two months straight I watched nothing but “Lost” on Netflix to finish all six seasons; I similarly did that with “Scandal”, “Homeland” and “The Blacklist”. I like criminal and political drama series; especially the ones that cause my brain to hurt from over analyzing. I also love The Food Network, Travel Channel and any brainless BRAVO reality show. I idolize Larry David from “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and Anthony Bourdain because they are brilliantly funny and creative men who are unbelievable speakers with a unique personality. This infatuation probably dates back to when the Backstreet Boys were cool and every girl pined over Nick and Brian, but of course, I had to be different, so all the posters up in my room were of A.J., the most unique one of them all!

What song do you put on when you need to focus or get in the zone and why?
The music I listen to is pretty underground, low tempo, deep house and it distracts me and puts me in a trance…I’ll name a few for anyone who wants to look it up. Yellow Claw: Wild Mustang; Banks: Beggin for thread and anything from Don Diablo! I don’t listen to the radio or mainstream, so again…I like to be different!
If you were an animal, what kind would you be and why?
Honestly, I like being human; predominantly because I like to talk and I like to talk a lot… animals don’t have that privilege! If I must choose, I would be a lion. Lions always appear mysterious while they are carefully calculating their next move, which is a quality I admire.  I would aspire to embrace qualities of a lion; patient, thoughtful, careful and organized in their hunt!
When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I remember the first time in 2nd grade they gave us yearbook questions and I answered that I wanted to be a Brain Surgeon when I grew up. With my psychology and counseling background, I think I am always accomplishing some sort of noninvasive brain surgery.

If you could get on a plane tomorrow and travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Nepal. I want to ride an elephant. It’s one of my dreams!
What is your all-time favorite quote?
“Some people want it to happen, some people wish it would happen, others make it happen.” - Michael Jordan.
If your life could be based on a movie or TV show, what show would it be and why?
Seinfeld! The characters and varied personalities in my life are hysterical, unique and absolutely dynamic. Somehow, miraculously we all connect and get along, which makes for an exciting and unpredictable life of adventure.
What is something no one knows about you?
I volunteer with the veterans because as a high school senior I was not eligible due to citizenship to apply to be in the Marines. I admire and honor all military men and women of our nation and wish I could have had the opportunity to be in the military and a protector of our country.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Absolutely time travel! I love history; I want to see the process of things from the beginning of time up to the present. I am fascinated by government, political figures, military and royalty.  I just want a day with a king, 10 minutes at war, an hour with the first president, at the victorious year where women burned their bras and when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed!
Jane, it was great speaking with you today, and we’re happy to have you on our team.
Thank you for sharing!
