Federal Scholarship Fuels a Nuclear Engineer's Path

Max Richardson builds momentum the way he builds everything else: one deliberate step at a time.

A mechanical engineering major at the University of Rhode Island (URI), Richardson pairs his degree with minors in nuclear engineering and physics and a clear ambition to help power the country's nuclear future. Slated to graduate in 2027, he has already earned $15,000 in competitive federal support for his education, most recently through a $10,000 scholarship from the U.S. Department of Energy's University Nuclear Leadership Program, a competitive award that recognizes students preparing to lead in the nation's nuclear energy workforce.

His path to that recognition ran through a high school robotics team, a specialized community college program, and the floor of a working power station, each step reinforcing the same belief: that steady, incremental growth compounds into real results.

A Scholarship Years in the Making

Richardson's scholarships are only part of the story. Asked to name a recent achievement he is proud of, he points to something with a wider reach.

"Due to my actions, the University of Rhode Island has been approved as an institution to receive DOE funding for student fellowships and research grants," he says.

Getting there drew on three habits he leaned on throughout: communication, persistence, and collaboration, the latter something he believes is integral to growth. He has consistently been a part of teams working together.

His interest in engineering took hold in high school, when he joined FIRST Robotics, a global youth robotics community where student-led teams handle everything from design and fabrication to programming and electrical work. The hands-on experience introduced him to mechanical principles and computer-aided design, and it pointed him toward the field he would go on to build a career around. He spent four years on a team and still returns to mentor the students who came after him.

After high school, Richardson enrolled at Three Rivers Community College in Norwich, Connecticut, home to a specialized Nuclear Engineering Technology associate degree program. Run in cooperation with the Millstone power station and taught in part by working and retired nuclear professionals, the program gave him the chance to earn radiation qualifications.

Since arriving at URI, Richardson has steadily added roles and recognitions. He has earned many accolades while staying active in engineering organizations, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the university's Hydrobotics team.

The Leader Who Raised the Bar

When Richardson traces where his drive comes from, he points to his father. His father holds a leadership role in the nuclear shipbuilding industry, and that example gave Richardson a standard to reach for.

"He inspired me to push my boundaries and achieve more than I thought was within my capabilities," Richardson says.

That influence shows up in how he approaches hard problems. Rather than asking whether something is possible, he tends to test how far his own effort can take him using the skill set he has continued to hone, especially through persistence and teamwork.

One Percent Better Every Day

One idea has anchored Richardson's approach since his robotics days, handed down by his former FIRST Robotics coach.

"Success comes from improvement. Strive to get one percent better every day," Richardson says.

It is a philosophy of accumulation rather than shortcuts, and it explains why he keeps seeking out ways to sharpen himself. He counts the NSLS among those resources, noting the range of self-improvement opportunities the NSLS offers its members.

For Richardson, the value is less about any single tool than about the habit the message instilled: keep closing the gap between where you are and where you want to be, a little at a time.

Guiding the Success of Others

Ask Richardson what leadership means, and his answer has less to do with authority than with usefulness.

"Leadership is an opportunity to guide the success of others," he says. "I step up to challenges when I feel my effort will help smooth out processes."

That instinct is already steering his next project. Richardson founded the URI Nuclear Club to give students minoring in nuclear engineering a place to build on what the classroom covers, and now he is focused on making sure it outlasts his own time on campus.

"I need to vet and secure a strong leadership team to ensure the organization is both successful and sustainable," he says.

Beyond graduation in 2027, Richardson plans on continuing his education, eventually earning an MBA and a master's degree in nuclear engineering.

Max's Advice for Future Leaders

Richardson's advice for aspiring leaders grows out of the same mindset that carried him from a robotics team to a federal scholarship. For him, progress depends on how a person handles the inevitable stumbles.

"Mistakes are for making, not for repeating," he says. "If you are not learning, you are not improving."

It is a fitting close for someone who measures himself in one-percent gains: keep moving forward, learn from every misstep, and let the improvements add up.
