The NSLS News
Letter from the President
Dear NSLS Member,
As we begin the winter holiday season, another year is winding down. It’s a perfect time for reflection as we keep in mind that the season is about so much more than festive parties and exchanging gifts. It’s also an opportunity to look back on accomplishments and focus on new goals for the upcoming year.
Giving to others in need is a rewarding experience all year long but especially during the holidays. There are many ways in which we can give back to our communities, from donating to our local food banks and shelters, to volunteering at local charities and more. Often, there are abundant resources available to assist those in need, but a coordinated plan of action may not be in place. This is where your leadership abilities can shine.
A great sample of organizing to help others is the story of 9-year-old Maya Covarrubia Aguilar, who wanted to do something to help the homeless in her city of Covina, California. Her family researched and learned that socks are among the most needed items at homeless shelters. They organized a successful sock drive within their community. It’s now going on its fourth year with over 10,000 pairs of socks donated through Maya’s efforts.
Here’s the Aguilar Family’s community service example at a glance:
Take the lead
Research (the Internet is a great place to start)
Create a plan of action
Utilize your skills or seek assistance from others to help
Leading a community service project not only impacts the lives of others, but it will also provide you with more professional and personal development, with potential new skills learned along the way. Always remember, your time is a valuable asset that can benefit others when you give.
I want to commend you on all your hard work this year, and I wish you the best of luck on upcoming exams!

On Sept. 7, 2019, University of Lynchburg’s National Society of Leadership and Success welcomed back members and new inductees for a barbecue in celebration of the new school year.
President and senior Kimberly Mendez said, “I thought the barbecue would be a great way to bring awareness to the honor society, but to also bring together the old and new members of the chapter. One of NSLS’s foundations is building a community of leaders, and I thought this event would be a great way to do that.”
