Letter from the President
Dear Society Member,
I hope your summer has been full of wonderful experiences. As you enter the final stretch of break and prepare for a new semester, I want to take this opportunity to discuss one of the single most important components needed to separate yourself from the rest of the pack—strong mental endurance.
Mental toughness is a measure of individual resilience, the ability to exercise inner strength, and the capability to deal with all challenges effectively.
To be successful and efficient leaders, we must learn to keep our minds focused, and not let ourselves get distracted. Much like any other skill, building mental toughness requires practice. One way to strengthen mental endurance is through exercises that challenge your brain, such as solving sudoku or crossword puzzles. Both require you to remember details and think ahead, and also strengthen your concentration and memory.
Another way to build mental endurance is to intentionally focus on what you are doing. Instead of dividing your attention between watching tv, doing your work, and surfing the internet, just focus on one thing. Doing this for a few minutes and gradually extending the time will strengthen your self-discipline and enhance your concentration.
The use of visualization is also key and can give you a mental space to rehearse. Many of the world's greatest athletes use visualization right before a game to practice mentally. Professional golfer and former World Number 1, Jason Day, closes his eyes and pictures what his swing will look like before stepping up to each tee. This technique aids in building mental stamina in other settings as well. Psychologist Robert E. Corb, PhD, suggests visualizing past achievements, focus in on the details and remember that feeling. Having this highlight reel in the back of your mind can give you a real boost of motivation.
This month, I challenge you to challenge yourself. Try something you’ve never done before, learn a new skill or hobby, or do any activity that makes your mind work. All of these will help build mental endurance. Remember Society members, mental toughness is built through small wins.
As you return from vacation or summer break, I hope these tips will help set you up for another successful academic year.

What makes the difference?
Usually we answer these questions by talking about the talent of top performers. He must be the smartest scientist in the lab. She’s faster than everyone else on the team. He is a brilliant business strategist.
But I think we all know there is more to the story than that.
In fact, when you start looking into it, your talent and your intelligence don’t play nearly as big of a role as you might think. The research studies that I have found say that intelligence only accounts for 30% of your achievement — and that’s at the extreme upper end.
What makes a bigger impact than talent or intelligence? Mental toughness.
