The NSLS News
Letter from the President
Dear NSLS Member,
I hope you had a fun and safe Labor Day weekend with your family and friends. As the Fall semester begins, I’m pleased to announce a new year of leadership opportunities for NSLS members. One highlight is our Leadership Summit Series. Four are scheduled this year, beginning next week in North Carolina. These highly-anticipated events allow members to learn new leadership strategies and network in a productive, like-minded community.
New semesters are full of opportunities to not only learn but to also inspire others to be their best. This is especially true for leaders like you. Leadership comes with great responsibility and inspiring others to succeed is a good measure of achievement.
Here are a few essential tips to remember as you strive to accomplish your own leadership goals:
Lead with the positive. When in a role of leadership or management, you will be asked to evaluate the work of others. When sharing your assessment of a team member’s performance, remember it is always better to lead with the positive. Begin with highlighting their strengths and accomplishments, giving accolades for jobs well-done. This will allow for a more comfortable transition into addressing areas upon which they could improve.
Turn obstacles into opportunities. A key component of being successful is never feeling defeated by unsettling roadblocks or adversity. Instead, make it your mission to persevere, despite unexpected setbacks. When something is standing in our way, it can ignite ingenuity and enable us to discover new ways to achieve our goals.
Be proactive. There is much truth to the adage, “If you want something done, you have to do it yourself.” Rather than expect others to hand you opportunities, be proactive in your quest. Identify your aspirations and go for it. Align yourself with those who can offer guidance or assistance, and be proactive about building these relationships.
Motivate others. Leaders are known for getting things done. However, stable leadership requires understanding that a significant part of the role is inspiring others to stay focused on pursuing their goals as well. Offer support and enthusiasm as you strive to motivate others. This is the best way to keep them engaged and build upon their self-confidence.
I wish you a productive school year of learning, development, and defining your future.

NSLS - It's more than just a fee:
By Kaitlyn Tambasco
When I entered college, I knew I wanted to keep up my involvement. I was involved quite a bit in high school and wanted to carry that into college. During my college orientation, a common theme among the orientation mentors was involvement. Some of the students told us that they regretted not getting involved earlier. That really stuck with me and it’s something that I will remember for the rest of my life.
Within the first couple of weeks of my first semester, I really took advantage of the involvement fair. At the involvement fair that semester, I signed up for Bible Study, the Newspaper, Music/Poetry club, Art club, Psychology club, History club, English club, Curling (which is a new sport in the Olympics), W.I.N.D, Circle K, Public Relations Club, Student Senate and Theatre club.
It’s Fall Orientation Time:
Chapters all across the country are preparing for new member orientation as the Fall semester begins. The orientation allows chapter advisors to officially welcome new NSLS members, share the schedule of events for the school term, and embark upon learning the foundations of the leadership development program.
The highly anticipated occasion also provides a perfect opportunity for new inductees to meet their fellow members and prepare for their upcoming LTD (Leadership Training Day). The NSLS National Office was excited to attend the new member orientation at Manhattanville College, in Purchase, New York. Chapter Advisor and Art Professor Gillian Greenhill Hannum, was a gracious host, welcoming over 60 students into the NSLS program. Thank you to the NSLS team at Manhattanville College for inviting us to meet your new students and board members.
After the student presentation, we had the opportunity to ask Mrs. Hannum her personal connection to the NSLS program. She expressed that as a decades-long educator and college faculty member, she is passionate about providing students with tangible opportunities that will allow nurturing, development and personal growth. The NSLS provides all these things and more, making it one of Manhattanville's most popular campus groups.
Warren Buffett Says This Is the Most Important Leadership Trait You Should Have
Whole companies are brought down when this trait is lacking.
Billionaire Warren Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, has no shortage of advice about the simple habits that separate successful leaders from everyone else.
Buffet has been telling us about the importance of one non-negotiable trait you should find in people: integrity. The Oracle of Omaha said:
We look for three things when we hire people. We look for intelligence, we look for initiative or energy, and we look for integrity. And if they don't have the latter, the first two will kill you because if you're going to get someone without integrity …
