For Katherin Mendez, leadership is about meeting people where they are.
A member of the Capella University chapter, Mendez recently celebrated the official launch of Wellness On The BlocQ, a community-centered wellness platform rooted in radical accessibility and authenticity. Her vision is deeply personal, bringing resources to people in ways that feel culturally relevant, inclusive, and empowering.
“It’s about shaping a platform that centers people first,” Mendez says. “From developing our brand identity to building strategic partnerships with local leaders, every step has reflected our mission to meet people where they are and provide wellness that’s real, relatable, and healing.”
Turning Vision into Action
Launching Wellness On The BlocQ required a blend of strategy, creativity, and heart.
Mendez leaned on strategic planning and organization to break her big-picture vision into actionable steps. She mapped out the brand ethos, identified potential partners, and developed the systems needed to make the work sustainable.
Just as critical was her focus on community engagement and relationship building. She reached out to local leaders, wellness practitioners, and creatives, forming partnerships grounded in shared values.
“Establishing a clear, authentic brand voice was critical,” she explains. “I worked to craft messaging that resonated with the people I wanted to reach, ensuring every piece of content and communication reflected our mission of radical accessibility and collective healing.”
Her experience with the NSLS helped sharpen these skills. Through the NSLS, Mendez gained tools for effective communication, goal setting, and leading with integrity, skills she now applies daily to grow her platform and inspire others. Being part of a network of leaders also reinforced the importance of accountability, both to herself and to her community.
“One of the most impactful aspects of the NSLS has been the opportunity to connect with a community of like-minded individuals who share a commitment to personal and professional growth. Being part of such a supportive network has inspired me to push beyond my limits and continually refine my leadership skills. I’ve also learned the importance of accountability — both holding myself accountable and being accountable to others in a leadership role.”
Faith as a Foundation
When asked about the leaders who inspire her, Mendez points to Jesus Christ as her ultimate example.
“His example of humility, service, and unwavering love has shaped how I approach leadership,” she says. “Leadership isn’t about power or recognition, but about uplifting others and making a real impact.”
That faith-driven approach informs every aspect of her work, from how she builds partnerships to how she engages with the people she serves.
“I believe leadership is about showing up for others, helping them heal, and guiding them toward growth,” she says. “I trust that God will guide me as I continue to create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and empowered.”

Building a Legacy for the Next Generation
Mendez’s goals extend far beyond her current work. She’s determined to leave a legacy her young son can be proud of, one rooted in faith, resilience, and service.
“I want my son to see that success isn’t just about achieving personal goals, but about making a difference in the lives of others and lifting them up along the way,” she says.
Through Wellness On The BlocQ, she hopes to create a movement that prioritizes mental, emotional, and physical well-being, offering pathways for healing and connection.
“It’s about creating a ripple effect of growth, trust, and transformation.”
Staying True to One’s Purpose
One of the most impactful pieces of advice Mendez has received came from her mother: “Stay true to your purpose, and everything else will follow.
“It reminded me that success isn’t just about external achievements or recognition, but about staying aligned with your core values and mission,” she says. “When I focus on serving others and staying grounded in my purpose, I trust that the right opportunities and growth will naturally follow.”
And with that purpose, Mendez sees leadership as a tool to create positive change.
“True leadership is rooted in service — it’s about lifting others up and providing support… A leader isn’t perfect, but they are consistent, compassionate, and committed to doing what’s best for the community or team they serve.”
Delivering on Radically-Accessible Wellness
The next chapter for Mendez and Wellness On The BlocQ includes hosting the first major community wellness event.
She also plans to expand the platform’s digital presence, offering virtual wellness resources and coaching to reach beyond her local community.
On a personal level, she’s committed to balancing her entrepreneurial growth with her role as a mother, modeling the values she hopes to pass on to her son.
“Achieving these goals requires dedication, collaboration, and faith,” she says. “I plan on staying aligned with my values, maintaining an open mindset, and trusting God’s guidance every step of the way.”
Katherin’s Advice for Future Leaders
“Lead with empathy, humility, and a heart of service,” Mendez says. “Leadership isn’t about authority, but about inspiring and empowering others to reach their full potential.”
She encourages leaders to truly listen to those around them, be vulnerable, and stay rooted in a strong sense of purpose.
“Embrace vulnerability. It’s okay to not have all the answers. Being authentic and transparent allows others to connect with you on a deeper level and fosters trust within your team… The more you serve others with a heart of humility and lead with authenticity, the more impact you’ll make.”
When Mendez thinks of leadership, it’s all about leaning on that purpose for good.
“Leadership becomes a lot clearer when you're rooted in something bigger than yourself. Whether it's faith, your mission, or a deep commitment to your community, having a strong sense of purpose will guide you through tough decisions and keep you aligned with what truly matters.”
